Crispy Air Fryer Chickpeas

These Roasted Chickpeas are ultra crispy and golden brown protein-packed snacks prepared with very little oil in the air fryer

  • Dry Chickpeas: Pat the chickpeas dry using a paper towel - this helps make them as crisp as possible.

  • Season: In a medium bowl, drizzle some olive oil over chickpeas and season with garlic powder, onion powder, red chili powder, salt, and pepper. Toss them well until well coated.

  • Preheat: Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Add the seasoned chickpeas to the air fryer basket and spread them in a single layer (cook in batches if required).
    Spray some oil on top if required.

  • Air Fry: Air fry at 375°F (190°C) for 12-14 minutes or till they are crispy. Shaking the basket couple of times. Mine was cooked perfectly done in 12 minutes.

  • Serve: Take them out and adjust seasoning. Serve while the roasted chickpeas are still warm and crispy.

Oven Method:

  • Preheat the oven to 425°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Spread the seasoned chickpeas evenly in a single layer.
    Bake at 425˚F for 20-30 minutes, tossing occasionally or until golden brown and crispy.

Notes

Seasoning for Roasted Chickpeas

Here are a few seasoning ideas.
  • Indian: Use ½ teaspoon red chili powder, ½ teaspoon garam masala, ½ teaspoon chaat masala, and ½ teaspoon salt.
  • Tex-Mex: Use 2 teaspoon of taco seasoning or fajita seasoning
  • Italian: Use 1-2 teaspoon of Italian seasoning and ½ teaspoon of salt
  • Cajun: Use 1-2 teaspoon cajun seasoning and ½ teaspoon of salt
  • Cinnamon-Sugar/Honey: use 1 tablespoon sugar or honey combined with ½ teaspoon cinnamon and then toss chickpeas in the seasoning after roasting.

Expert Tips & Notes

  • Cook in batches. Make sure to spread the chickpeas in a single layer in the air fryer basket without overcrowding, Cook in batches if needed.
  • Shake the basket halfway: It's important to shake the basket halfway through to allow the chickpeas to be cooked evenly.
  • Make sure to pat the chickpeas dry with paper towels as they help to make them more crispy.
  • Finish eating crispy roasted chickpeas fast as they lose their crispiness as time goes on. Also, make sure to store them at room temperature.
  • The exact cooking time will vary based on the air fryer being used.
