Instant Pot Wild Rice

Here is a perfect recipe to cook wild rice in the Instant Pot. It is nutty, chewy, and easy to cook in an instant pot. You can use it as a side dish or with salads. Vegan and Gluten-free.

What is Wild Rice?

Wild rice is not rice at all. It is the seed from an aquatic grass that grows in lakes and streams. It looks and cooks like other types of rice hence it is referred to as rice. Cooked wild rice has a nutty, earthy flavor and chewy texture.

How to Cook Wild Rice in Instant Pot

Rinse the wild rice with water. Then add it to the instant pot steel insert along with vegetable broth (or water), salt and give a stir.

Close the Instant Pot with pressure valve to Sealing. Cook on High Pressure for 30 minutes.

Once the pot beeps, Do a Natural Pressure Release (NPR).

Wild rice is fully cooked when the grain opens and you see the white germ. Gently fluff with a fork and Enjoy wild rice.

How to Cook Wild Rice on the Stovetop

Place the wild rice, vegetable broth, and salt in a pot. Bring it to a boil, cover, and simmer for 45-50 minutes. Keep an eye on it and once is rice is done, drain and Enjoy.

How to use Wild Rice

  • use it as a side dish
  • add in the veggies to make a grain salad
  • make wild rice soup
  • make pilaf, stews or casserole

Tips & Variations

  • This recipe is for wild rice and not a blend. Some packages have a variety of rice combined and labelled as "wild rice blend", make sure to check that.
  • Try to use vegetable broth instead of water while cooking to make a flavorfull wild rice.
  • You can add some vegetables and make it a healthy salad.
  • You can store the cooked wild rice in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days.
