Crispy homemade healthy sweet plantain chips / banana chips made out of raw bananas that are healthier, made with very little coconut oil in the air fryer. Vegan and gluten-free snacks.

Banana chips from Hot Chips were a childhood favorite. I still remember walking to the store and buying freshly fried, crispy banana chips and potato chips.
For so many years, every time I visited India, I couldn't leave without picking up a packet of these chips. Everyone loves them and they are a perfect snack with evening masala chai or great to pack for kids' school lunchbox snack.
Today, I am sharing how to make guilt-free banana chips in the air fryer with very minimal oil in under 25 minutes. You may also like my air fryer zucchini chips, and air fryer kale chips.
Ingredients for Homemade Plantain Chips
- Plantains/Raw Banana - Choose green plantains to make these chips. If you can't find them, you can also use raw green bananas.
- Coconut Oil - Traditionally, Banana chips are deep-fried in coconut oil in India. I used cold-pressed coconut oil today. You can also use any cooking oil of your choice.
- Spices - I used only turmeric powder.
How to Make Banana Chips in an Air Fryer
Cut the ends of the plantain and peel the skin.
In a medium bowl, combine 4 cups of water, turmeric powder, and salt. Mix well. Place the peeled banana and let it soak for at least 10 minutes.
Pat the banana dry with a paper towel and slice the banana using a mandolin slicer.
In a medium bowl, add some coconut oil and turmeric. Mix well. Then, place the sliced bananas and toss until fully coated.
Preheat the air fryer to 350°F (176°C). Place the sliced raw bananas in the air fryer basket and spread them in a single layer (cook in batches if required).
Air fry them at 350°F (176°C) for 10 minutes or until they are crispy and done. You may want to air fry for an additional 3-4 minutes. Shake the basket halfway through.
Once done, sprinkle some salt and enjoy, or place the banana chips in an air-tight container.
Pro-Tips & Notes
- Dry the soaked banana thoroughly and then slice it before air frying, or the water can steam the chips while air frying.
- Work in batches. Make sure to spread the sliced banana in a single layer in the air fryer basket, leaving some space between slices. Cook in batches if needed.
- Shake the basket halfway: It's important to shake the basket halfway through to ensure even cooking.
- The exact cooking time will vary based on the air fryer being used.
- You may also add other seasonings like red chili powder or black pepper powder for a variation.
FAQs
Yes. These air fryer banana chips are made with very little oil, are non-fried, and are made without added sugar. These chips also provide magnesium, iron, vitamin A, phosphorus, and potassium in small quantities.
To keep them crispy, let them cool completely, then store your banana chips, in an airtight container at room temperature for 2-3 days. If they are less crispy, then air fry again for 1-2 minutes.
