Brown Basmati Rice
They are whole-grain rice varieties with the bran layer intact, providing a chewy structure and nutty flavor. It offers significant health benefits due to its higher fiber content and lower glycemic index compared to white rice.
Ingredients
You will need only two main ingredients; the other ones are optional.
- Brown Basmati Rice: This long-grain brown rice is easily available in local Indian grocery stores. I like the Royal Brown Basmati Rice brand.
- Water: I like to use plain water. You can also use low-sodium vegetable broth to make it more flavorful (adjust salt in this case).
- Oil (Optional): adding oil adds flavor to the grain and helps to keep the grains separated while cooking.
- Salt (Optional): You can add a little to season the rice.
How to Cook Brown Basmati Rice in Instant Pot
Rinse the brown basmati rice thoroughly, repeating the process 2-3 times until the water runs clear. This helps to remove excess starch from the rice grains.
Note: This is a no-soak method, and my rice always turns out soft, fluffy, and separated.
Add the rinsed brown basmati rice, water (or vegetable broth), oil, and salt to the Instant Pot steel insert. Give the mixture a quick stir.
Securely close the lid and set the vent to "SEALING". Then, choose the PRESSURE COOK/MANUAL (High Pressure) setting and adjust the cooking time to 22 minutes.
When the Instant Pot beeps, allow the pressure to release naturally for 10 minutes, and then open the lid.
Use a fork or ladle to fluff up the rice. Do not stir.
Serve rice hot with any curry of your choice.

- Place a trivet on the inner pot.
- Then place a small container with rice and water on the trivet, covering it with a lid. Proceed with the remaining recipe instructions.
How to Serve?
Brown basmati rice can be served with Indian curries, dal, or sambar. Leftover cooked rice can also be used to make rice dishes like fried rice or jeera rice.
Tips to Make Perfect Brown Basmati Rice in Instant Pot
- Rinsing the Rice: Always rinse the uncooked rice before you cook it. This helps to remove excess starch, make it less sticky, and prevent it from clumping together.
- Water: Rice Ratio: The Instant Pot's water-to-rice ratio differs from that used in stovetop cooking. For perfect, fluffy, softer brown basmati rice, use 1¼ cups of water for every 1 cup of rice.
- Fluff: Gently fluff the rice with a fork or ladle. Avoid stirring.
- Scaling: If you want to cook more rice, you can double or triple the recipe. The cooking time will remain the same.
Storage Suggestions
- Store: Allow the rice to cool, and store the leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
- Freeze: Freeze the leftover rice in a freezer-safe ziplock for up to 4-6 months.
- Reheat: Sprinkle some water on the rice and reheat in the microwave on high for 2-3 minutes until done. If the rice is Frozen, defrost it in the refrigerator for a few hours and then reheat it.
