Why Make Curries in the Instant Pot?
Curries are my favorite thing to cook in my pressure cooker because it's so quick, easy, one-pot, hands-off, and less messy for cleaning.
You can also cook both the curry and rice together (provided they have similar cooking times) using the pot-in-pot cooking method (PIP) in your Instant Pot. This helps to reduce the cooking time in the Instant Pot as two meals are cooked at the same time.
Some Instant Pot curry recipes may call for a quick release (i.e., opening up the valve immediately after the pressure cooking time). Be careful, as the hot liquids can spill out along with the steam, resulting in a huge mess in the kitchen.

FAQs
When you get a burn notice on your Instant Pot, it may be for one of two reasons.
You don't have enough liquid in your Instant Pot.
Often, while sauteing, small bits of food happen to stick to the pot. If they are not removed before pressure cooking, due to the heat, they get burnt. So make sure you deglaze the inner pot with some water. This is the best way to avoid getting a burn notice.
A few curry recipes may have a lot of liquid in the pot; hence, it takes a while for an Instant Pot to build pressure. Once the pressure builds up, cooking will be faster.
Best Instant Pot/Pressure Cooker Accessories
- Tall Trivet: To cook multiple dishes at once using the pot-in-pot method, I highly recommend using a tall trivet. You can cook curries/rice at the same time.
- Stackable Containers: To cook the pot-in-pot method (cooking multiple items at once), these containers are very useful. I generally use a stainless steel or Pyrex glass container for cooking rice, lentils, or veggies.
- Steamer basket: It prevents the veggies from soaking up too much of the water in the bottom of the pot, preventing overcooked, mushy vegetables.
- Immersion Blender: The immersion blender is very useful while making purees or soups in the Instant Pot. It helps you to blend food in the same pot.
- Oven Mitts: It's useful to handle hot, steaming food.

Viji Rajmohan
Hi
I do not have a steam button on my instapot. How do I try out recipes that say steam.
Bhavana Patil
Hi Viji,
Another option to steam food in your Instant Pot is to use the "Sauté" setting, which doesn't use pressure.
1. Start by adding 1 to 2 cups of water to the inner pot of your Instant Pot.
2. Position the trivet or a steamer basket. Place the veggies to steam in the basket. Next, securely close the Instant Pot using a clear glass lid.
3. Press SAUTE function and set the TIMER to your desired duration. That's it! You're now ready to steam your food in the Instant Pot.
