Ingredients for Making Sour Cream Dip
Here are a few ingredients to make the sour cream chip dip recipe.
- Sour Cream – I like to use full-fat sour cream to make the dip rich and creamy but, you can use non-fat or light if you’re counting your calories. You can also swap some of your sour cream with plain Greek yogurt for added protein and tangier flavor.
- Mayonnaise - makes the dip creamy and enhances the taste (I either use a vegan mayo or Primal Kitchen Avocado Oil mayo).
- Herbs - I have used dried chives and dill in this recipe. You may also use fresh herbs to bring bold flavors to the dips. dried thyme
- Garlic powder – added for flavoring. You can also use freshly minced garlic.
- Onion powder – is added to get sweetness from the onion, so do not skip it.
- Lime Juice (or Vinegar) - Fresh lime/lemon juice gives the best flavor. It helps to keep the dip fresh for longer and enhances the taste. It's optional.
- Seasoning - Salt & freshly ground black pepper.

Storage Suggestions
Fridge: Leftover sour cream dip will keep well in an airtight container for 4-5 days in the refrigerator.
Freezer: It is not recommended to freeze this dip. Once it thaws, sour cream and mayonnaise will split and become watery.
Tips to make the Best Sour Cream and Chive Dip
- Use full-fat sour cream: Low-fat sour cream can be thinner in texture, you can still use it, but the results may not be excellent. Try to use full-fat sour cream to make the dip rich, creamy, and flavorful.
- Add water or milk for a runnier dip if you prefer: Add a tablespoon of water or milk if you prefer a runnier dip. I like the thickness of the dip without adding any water, though.
- Adjust the seasonings: Taste the dip mixture and adjust the seasoning as per your preference as you mix.
Variations
- Fresh Herbs: You can also use finely chopped fresh dill and chives. You may also use parsley.
- Swap some of your sour cream for Greek yogurt: To add probiotics, protein, and tanginess and cut on calories.
- Spicy: For a spicy sour cream sauce, add a little cayenne powder, or a teaspoon of sriracha sauce to the sour cream mixture. You can also add some minced chili pepper or jalapeno for the heat.
- Sour cream and onion dip: Add some caramelized onion to the dip mixture for a variation.

I prefer to use a full-fat sour cream, it makes the dip richer in flavor, creamier, and less watery in texture. However, you can still use a low-fat sour cream in this recipe, but the dip will be thinner.

I freestyle sour cream dip all the time and is right up my alley. Okay Try adding roasted red bell peppers to this.
Bhavana Patil says
Good to hear that, John. Thank you for suggesting red bell peppers, I will give it a try.
Sheryl says
I used fresh dill and green onion tops as I had no chives as well as lemon juice. With Russian fresh garlic thus dip is addictive

Hi Sheryl, Thanks for letting me know about the variations you made.:)
