Biranji Anna is a very unique Basmati flavored rice recipe prepared with butter, garlic, and a few spices in Instant Pot pressure cooker or stovetop. This dish originated in a city called Ranebennur in North Karnataka. It is typically served along with Badanekayi yennegayi (Brinjal Curry).
Today I am going to share the easiest and tasty authentic biranji rice recipe. I got this biranji recipe from my Mom's friend Nirmala Aunty from Ranebennur. This dish is usually served at North Karnataka weddings or any other functions.
This rice dish is typically prepared from butter, and dont reduce the quantity of butter if you are looking for authentic biranji anna. Typically, Basmati Rice is used, but if you don't have it, you can use Sona Masuri too. This also has lots of garlic in the recipe.

How to Make Biranji Anna in Instant Pot
Firstly, rinse and soak the basmati rice in water for at least 15 minutes.
Blend the cinnamon, cardamom, and clove to a fine powder. Keep aside.
Press SAUTE mode on Instant Pot. Add butter, and once it has melted, add garlic cloves, cashews, curry leaves, grated ginger, and green chilies. Saute for a minute or until garlic turns to light brown.
Then add the powdered cinnamon, cardamom, and clove (about one teaspoon) and saute for 15 seconds.
Add basmati rice, salt, and water and give a stir. Adjust salt at this stage.
Close the Instant Pot with pressure valve to Sealing. Cook on High Pressure for 5 minutes.
Once the pot beeps, Wait for natural pressure release (NPR).
Lastly, remove the lid from you, add coriander leaves, and grated dry coconut. Mix well.
Pressure Cooker Biranji Anna is ready. Serve hot with Badanekayi yennegayi.
Stovetop Pressure Cooker Method
Follow the same steps as the Instant Pot, for the stovetop pressure cooker. Close the lid, place a whistle, and cook for 2 whistles on medium flame. Rest all the steps remain the same.
What to Serve with Biranji Rice?
Serve Biranji rice with Badanekayi yennegayi, or with any kurma on the side.
Tips & Variations
- The aroma and texture of the rice are purely based on the quality of basmati rice. If you don't have Basmati rice, then use regular sona masuri rice.
- Authentic Biranji anna is only made with butter, so do not replace it with ghee or oil. Homemade Butter tastes, even more, better for this recipe.
