Storage & Make-Ahead
Make ahead: You can prepare the cream cheese veggie mixture a day before serving and store it in the refrigerator in an airtight container. When you are ready to serve, assemble the sandwich and Enjoy.
If you are packing it for travel or lunchbox, then wrap the sandwich tightly using plastic wrap, wax paper, or aluminum foil, to keep it fresh.
Store: Cream cheese sandwich tastes best when consumed within a few hours of making it. However, you can wrap the sandwich tightly in aluminum foil or plastic wrap and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 day. This will prevent the bread from drying out and keep the bread fresh.
Note: Certain vegetables like cucumbers and onion may release water and make the sandwich soggy. So, using these vegetables just before assembling the sandwich is best.
Tips
- Butter: Smearing butter on the bread acts as a moisture barrier, i.e., slows down the transfer of moisture from the filling to the bread, hence preventing the bread from getting soggy. So don't skip it.
- Toast the bread: You may toast the bread on Tawa or use a sandwich maker or grill it to golden brown and crisp. This will give a nice crunch and prevent the sandwich from getting soggy from the cream cheese and veggies.
Variations
- Bread: Use any bread of your choice, like white, brown, multigrain bread, or sourdough.
- Other Veggies: You can add other vegetables of your choice, like regular or spring onion, lettuce, and cucumber.
- Cheese: If you like it extra cheesy, add shredded cheese like mozzarella, cheddar, or cheese slice in between, and then toast/grill the veg cream cheese sandwich if you like.
- Mayonnaise: To make it extra creamy, you can add 1-2 tablespoons of mayonnaise to the cream cheese veggie mixture.
- Dried Herbs: You may also add any dried herbs of your choice, dried chives.
- Vegan: use vegan cream cheese and butter.
- Add Protein: You can also add crumbled paneer, or tofu to make it nutritious.
